Random Drug Testing and Credit Check
Form Integral Piece of Background Screening Policies
August 2007
In Brownsville Texas, a clerk at their county courthouse faces criminal charges for possession of marijuana. And while pre-employment and random drug testing aren't required for courthouse employees, this is yet another situation that demonstrates how background screening offers so much more than a cheap background check.
In Brownsville, courthouse employees aren't required to fulfill any type of background check or pre-hire screening, even though they handle important, sensitive paperwork on a regular basis.
But even if a cheap background check were implemented, this kind of service doesn't include random drug testing or a credit check for those employees with access to sensitive personal information.
While pre-employment drug testing is common, it hasn't really slowed the use of drugs in the workplace nearly as much as random drug testing; this is because many drug users know how to cheat a test, or can stay sober long enough to pass just one. But, when employees are made aware of random testing policies, they are much less likely to abuse drugs in the first place.
And as for a credit check, this is a unique and important tool offered in background screening services designed to minimize occurrences of identity theft and employee fraud. Those potential employees with a long history of financial trouble are more likely to be "tempted" when they're confronted with information that could be worth a lot of money. Information like that routinely handled in a courthouse.
And of course, all of the above comes alongside the in-depth criminal background checks that are standard for background screening policies.
In cases like these it's clear that the more specific tools of employee screening make it a cut above a standard check, and whether it's a credit check, education verification, or plain criminal records checks, there's a place for quality screening in every workplace.
