Background Screening:

How Employee Drug Testing Maintains Workplace Safety

Workplace safety and violence in the workplace are common topics of discussion following an incident that gains nationwide attention, as was the case in Virginia. And, as employers think about ways to keep their on-the-job environment safe, background screening investigations, and especially employee drug testing, once again reveal themselves as one of the best means of protecting managers, clients, and employees alike.

At occupationalhazards.com, startling statistics reflect that violence in the workplace is much more common than previously assumed: "workplace violence is not a rarity, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). In 2006, BLS reported that 95% of the 7.1 million U.S. employers reported at least one act of some type of workplace violence, which can include anything from assault and armed robbery to homicide."

And when the odds are stacked in such an ominous way, how can employers and managers take steps to prevent violence in the workplace?

By relying on employee drug testing as it is administered through quality background screening procedures, that's how.

Up to 40% of industrial fatalities and 47% of industrial injuries can be linked to alcohol use and alcoholism. And, employees who use drugs are 3.6 times more likely to be involved in a workplace accident and 5 times more likely to file a workers compensation claim. They're also prone to unstable behavior, and are 2 times more likely to have multiple jobs in the past year.

Employee drug testing before hiring, alongside random drug testing policies, can cut those injuries and fatalities in half. And background screening has more to offer in terms of workplace safety. Employees with a history of mental instability will also have multiple employers in their past who remember such behavior. Extensive resume checks and educational references can help employers maintain workplace safety by offering a full picture of the potential hire before they enter the workplace environment.

Whenever a tragedy such as this occurs, everyone asks themselves "how did we not know?" With quality background screening it's just easier to know who your new employee really is before they come to work.
