Drug Testing Felons

How Employee Drug Testing Helps Employers and Felons
April 2008

In North Carolina, Mayor Allen Joines has encouraged area business owners to hire people who have been released from prison. He argues that those ex-felons who find employment are less likely to revert to a criminal lifestyle; by relying on employment background screening procedures, and particularly employee drug testing, many employers can hire an ex-felon without fearing for workplace safety.

According to census figures, there are at least 2 million people in American prisons at any given time. Each year, over 600,000 ex-offenders re-enter society, and those who take their new life seriously will be searching for a job. On a regular basis, more than 5,000 people are on parole or probation, and more than 30 million people in the United States have been convicted of a crime.

So how can employers offer employment to ex-felons without fearing negative consequences? The answer lies in quality employment background screening.

Today's employment background screening offers more than a simple records search. Certainly an employee with a criminal history of being dangerous behind the wheel might not be right for a job involving driving for the company, and someone with a history of fraud might not be right for handling money or information.

But by far the biggest issue most employers have is with drug abuse, which is where employee drug testing can play a major part. Employee drug testing today encompasses more than simple pre-hire testing, it can also include random drug testing and post-accident testing.

In workplaces where employees are aware that employment background screening includes random testing, drug abuse drops significantly, and employers can rest assured that their workforce is a safe one.

This allows employers to offer ex-felons the opportunities that can help them start a new life, while maintaining workplace safety and integrity at the same time.
