Colorado University Implements Criminal Background Screening after Campus Stabbing
September 2007

In a statement released to the parents of their incoming and registered students, the University of Colorado at Boulder will immediately begin to implement criminal background screening on all employees, full and part-time, as a result of a near deadly attack this week upon a student.

According to The Rocky Mountain News, an on-campus worker attacked a freshman student with a knife, slicing his throat and narrowly avoiding killing him: "On Monday, he slit the throat of a freshman at the student center and stabbed himself before he was subdued with a Taser shot."

The individual in question was a hire from an agency for the rehabilitated mentally ill. No kind of screening was done when the employee began working as a cashier at CU.

Upon instituting criminal background screening of the attacker, it was discovered that he had been acquitted by reason of insanity in a similar stabbing of a stranger in a Salvation Army store in Longmont in 2001.

It's very good news to hear that CU plans to institute screening as a means of protecting their students and providing parents with the kind of reassurance they need in the wake of recent incidents, including the Virginia Tech tragedy.

Here at EBI we hope that the university won't take the cheap route, and instead of implementing a quick online background check, will institute real background screening on employees. True screening includes criminal background screening on local, state, and national levels, and provides results that are far more reliable than a quick check of local public records.

Parents today want to know that their children are as safe as possible in the University setting, and by relying on quality background screening CU can rest assured that they've done their part to protect the student body.
