Criminal Background Screening

to Occupy Central Role in Clinton Fundraising Campaign
September 2007

The disorganized nature of public records, and the futility of using them as a background check mechanism, gained a lot of attention this week, as presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton's campaign dramatically severed ties with a disgraced fundraiser with a 15-year criminal history. Furthermore, according to the Washington Post, Clinton's campaign will now require criminal background screening of any major contributors to their efforts.

The article states that Norman Hsu, "an apparel businessman, fell from grace earlier this month after it was revealed he was a fugitive in a 15-year-old criminal case in California. On Monday, the Los Angeles Times reported he also is under investigation in connection with recent business dealings."

Clinton's campaign is famous for its thorough nature; so what happened here? Apparently, only standard public records were searched on Hsu's behalf, a method familiar in terms of a cheap background check, but clearly not enough to catch a smart, multi-state offender.

And how much is that cheap little background check costing the Clintons? Something along the lines of $850,000 dollars. Ouch.

This explains why following quality criminal background screening procedures has become a pre-hire requirement for Fortune 500 companies and small businesses alike. A cheap background check just won't provide the consistency and quality of results that real screening provides. With false names, faulty social security information, and multi-state offenders moving from place to place, today's criminals are just too smart to be caught by a poorly organized public records system.

And as the Clintons undoubtedly know, discovering a dangerous employee or contributor before they can cause any damage is worth every penny for quality background screening.
