Employee Drug Testing:
How Background Screening Keeps Business Liability Insurance Premiums Down May, 2007
At constructionpros.com, contributing editor Garry Bartecki does a great job of examining how it is that good quality background screening, and particularly employee drug testing, can keep business liability insurance costs down.
As Bartecki makes clear, "losses must be kept under control," and the two factors of loss that drive premiums up are "frequency," and "severity."
So how can background screening minimize accidents, or prevent them in the first place? By helping business owners and managers to make better hiring decisions. "Companies need to check motor vehicle records, verify previous employment, industry experience, educational background, manufacturer's training and so on."
A DMV records check can reveal someone with a history of drunk driving, or simple, and dangerous, carelessness. Previous employment should certainly be verified, since around 50% of today's resumes reveal exaggerated or fraudulent information. And in conjunction with manufacturers training and education, every business owners should do a thorough criminal records search on a local, state, and national level to keep dangerous and unstable individuals out of the workplace.
But of them all, employee drug testing is the most important part of minimizing business liability insurance costs. Drug users on the job are 3 times more likely to hurt themselves or someone else, and 5 times more likely to file a claim when they do so. And, with an estimated 73% of all drug users employed and using on the job, employee drug testing might be the most effective tool for managing costs available for business owners today.
In the article, "attitudes toward loss control and safety in the work place must come from the top down," and by relying on background screening those attitudes can enjoy the support of solid decision-making and real-life workplace safety management.
