Employee Drug Testing and Blood Alcohol Testing:
Maximize Workplace Safety May, 2007
This week, 4 commuter rail workers tested positive for drugs or alcohol after they were involved in the three most serious accidents that occurred since the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad took over the system in December 2003, according to a memo outlining a new safety agreement with federal officials. As a result, employee drug testing and blood alcohol testing will now be enforced with greater regularity in an effort to create and maintain workplace safety.
According to the article at boston.com, "as part of the one-year safety pact, the railroad company pledged a "good faith effort" to get the workers' union to agree to allow random drug and alcohol testing, and promised to give more training to supervisors on how to spot employees under the influence of drugs or alcohol."
And if you think "we don't need it in my workplace" when you think of employee drug testing or blood alcohol testing, you should really think again. According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), alcohol and alcohol related illness cost society about $148 billion dollars a year, including lost productivity, injury on the job, and medical costs.
And in terms of drug abuse, employee drug testing could save the Postal Service alone $52 million a year. By implementing such screening across all areas of American business, billions could be saved in productivity, reduced absenteeism, reduced injury and fewer worker's comp claims.
There are roughly 7.4 million employees abusing drugs on a regular basis, and even more costing businesses through alcohol related incidents. By implementing random employee drug testing and blood alcohol testing into their workplace safety system, the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad stands to save a great deal of money, and a great many lives.
