Employee Drug Testing Sees New Popularity after Tragedy
October 2007

The August tragedy in Boston, in which 2 firefighters died on the job, has lead to an increase in employee drug testing and interest in random testing policies across the nation.

Autopsy results showed one of the firefighters was legally drunk and the other had cocaine in his blood. The resulting boost in background screening procedures demonstrates how pre-hire and ongoing screenings are recognized as being more than just precautionary measures; they are safety measures intended to protect employees from the dangerous effects of drug and alcohol abuse on the job.

In Windham, Maine, Selectman Roger Hohenberger wants to require random drug and alcohol testing for town police and firefighters. Those in favor of the measure feel that firefighters and police officers are people just like anyone else, and subject to such vices, especially in light of the dangerous and high-stress environment they face every day.

Detractors argue that background screening should only happen before someone is hired, and that employee drug testing for officers and firefighters isn't necessary. For example, Pelham Town Manager Tom Gaydos questioned the need for random drug and alcohol testing for public safety employees. He said he believes police and firefighters are able to police themselves.

But the real truth is that drug and alcohol abuse happens on the job no matter where it is. Certainly background screening is tremendously important in such dangerous fields of work, but in order to protect the health, safety, and well-being of police officers, firefighters, and the public who rely on them every day, employee drug testing and random drug testing must be implemented on a regular basis.
