Random Testing Receiving Support as Part of Background Screening Procedures
November 2007

The issue of random employee drug testing is the topic of the op-ed piece recently published by the Tucson Citizen. And as editorialist Shaunti Feldhahn makes clear, this particular aspect of background screening is not only gaining in popularity, it's gaining newfound importance in today's information markets.

Feldhahn is straight to the point when she says that companies who rely on pre-hire testing are "well within their rights" to deny employment to anyone who tests positive for illicit drug use. "So why wouldn't they be within their rights to randomly test someone after employment? Surely drug use matters far more once an employee holds a piece of the company's future in his hands!"

And she is absolutely correct. Background screening isn't just about pre-hire protocols anymore; it's about maintaining the integrity of the company and protecting both employees and clients on a regular basis. Random employee drug testing also protects us in today's more complex work environment, where personal data and information are as important as someone's physical health and wellbeing. "What about an equity analyst whose insightful reports affect whether your 401(k) tanks? What about the guy down the hall whose clear thinking avoids stupid corporate financial decisions? What about the saleswoman whose revenue-generating ability affects whether you have a job next year?"

Today's background screening procedures are designed to suit just these situations. Alongside traditional standbys like education references and resume checks are DMV driving records for employees who drive, credit checks for those who will have access to sensitive data, and employee drug testing for those who can affect another person's physical health or their livelihood.

Department of Labor data show that in 2005, nearly 20 million people in America - almost 7% of the population - were considered illicit drug users. And 3 in 4 had gainful employment at the time. This does not even include alcohol, which accounted for another 55 million workers who binged at least once within the last month of testing.

And that's many millions of reasons why background screening has evolved to suit the modern workforce, and must be implemented on a regular basis.
