Background Screening

Growth in Popularity and Importance Needed
May, 2007

The recently released results of employment background screening throughout the year 2006 show that it's becoming more and more important to know who you're hiring before they enter the workplace.

Last week's near disaster for Home Depot serves as the perfect example, where a previously registered sex offender simply moved to another state, passed a superficial criminal records check, and was soon hired to enter people's home and install kitchens.

But Home Depot's isn't the only case to prove that background screening procedures are even more necessary than ever before. Employment screening studies have just found that in the year 2006, criminal records found among new hires went up from 8.5% to 9.1%, false or embellished employment records went up from 36.5% to 49.4%, and education verification found that 21.6% of hires are dishonest about their training, a number up from 14.1%

What does this mean? It means that more and more people are lying about who they are when they try to get a job.

And it means that background screening is more important than ever. Negligent hiring lawsuits are still going strong, as are fraud, drug abuse on the job, and workplace violence, and without background screening every employer takes a chance that they're bringing an unstable person into their workplace environment.

Whether it's pre employment drug testing, random drug testing, education verification, reference checks, a social security trace, criminal records search, or even a credit check, every employer should rely on quality background screening before they allow an employee to potentially put them, their clients, and their other employees at risk.
