Background Screening Educators
Why Cheap Background Checks Are Failing in Illinois
December 2007
Recent analysis by local newspapers has found that due to an over-reliance on cheap background checks, Illinois has a serious problem with inappropriate or even dangerous teachers. It is cases such as these that clarify why quality background screening is a far superior means of safeguarding vulnerable populations like children.
According to wthitv.com, "Illinois ranks near the bottom when it comes to checking teacher backgrounds and yanking credentials of problem educators. The state notched in as the 46th state to require FBI background checks for incoming teachers when it passed a law in 2004."
And even when backgrounds are being checked, cheap background checks still happen with too much regularity; the quality of information that is returned with such checks is often unorganized, hard to understand, or even patently false.
This has led to the hiring of dangerous educators, like the case of George Tolbert. Even with three Illinois felony convictions for child molestation, and a stint in prison, Tolbert was still able to obtain an Illinois teaching certificate and worked with children again for almost 15 years before he was caught.
Many detractors argue that schools go with cheap background checks to save costs and time. But cases like Tolbert's should make it abundantly clear that in situations where children are involved, quality background screening is well worth the wait and the cost.
Background screening is simply more accurate, covering criminal records checks on a local, state, and even national level. This means that an individual with a criminal history can't just move to another state and start over at another school. And, with the reference checks that are also a part of such screening, educators who have been fired for alarming reasons won't be able to hide their previous actions when they apply to work with children somewhere else.
