Background Screening Caregivers

Random Drug Testing to Protect the Elderly
January 2008

The Roanoke Injury Board released an online editorial this week regarding nursing home abuse and neglect, and while it is true that background screening is of tremendous importance in this line of work, without random drug testing it is still too easy for the elderly to suffer abuse from the very people entrusted with their care.

Too often the care givers assigned to this vulnerable population are what the article calls "temp nurses" who are "supplied by one of thousands of temporary worker supply agencies." And while most nursing homes do a "fair job" of background screening new hires, a "fair job" simply isn't enough for any hire, part-time or full-time, when it comes to nursing the elderly.

This is because nursing home abuse is both epidemic, and difficult to catch. The employees are often under-trained people provided through staffing agencies, nothing more than "warm bodies" to be counted if an inspector visits to check staffing ratios. Screening such employees for the safety of their patients is sometimes skipped, delayed, or simply poorly done.

And even for full-time staff, doing a minimal job of screening employees leaves gaps that are easily exploited. Identity theft is rampant, suggesting that a criminal background check should be supplemented by a credit check to reveal dangerous financial information. And with access to the drugs and medications often used by elderly men and women, drug testing is an absolute must in this line of work.

But pre-employment testing just isn't enough, and too few agencies go beyond that preliminary testing sequence. It's easy for many people to either cheat on that one test, or even to stay sober long enough to pass it before returning to old, bad habits. This is why random drug testing ought to be the norm in nursing care homes and for companies that hire-out care givers.

Today, an estimated 10 million employed individuals are drug users, and there are more employed drug users out there than unemployed. Random drug testing significantly reduces the incidences of drug abuse on the job, and does a superior job of removing dangerous employees from the workplace.

And when your workplace involves administering necessary drugs to an elderly or infirm patient, there's no excuse for excluding drug testing from the background screening procedures that ought to be in place already.
