More Extensive Background Screening Applied to Boston Firefighters
January 2008
For the first time, Boston emergency medical technicians overwhelmingly approved a background screening contract that includes random employee drug testing to minimize on-the-job injuries and fatalities.
Mayor Thomas M. Menino had been pushing for random drug and alcohol testing of firefighters after autopsy reports on two firefighters who died in an August blaze showed that one had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit to drive in Massachusetts. Another firefighter had traces of cocaine in his system.
But Menino's efforts to incorporate employee drug testing for firefighters had been blocked by the firefighter's union, which has in the past always opposed such a policy, and which had engaged in a bitter dispute with the fire commissioner since the autopsy results had been made public.
An agreement was finally reached when more aggressive background screening policies where balanced against a five-year wage increase, the ability to collect a full pension at an earlier age, and a 5 percent increase in employee contributions to healthcare.
While this might seem an expensive trade, in reality it isn't. Drug and alcohol abuse on the job costs American businesses billions a year in injuries to people and property, high turnover, and inflated worker's comp claims.
And in this case, it can easily cost the lives of firefighters and average citizens alike.
Without this extensive background screening policies, including employee drug testing and random drug testing, the potential dangers regularly associated with working under the influence could easily be magnified a hundred times in a workplace environment where lives are on the line every day.
