Workplace Safety in NY
Workplace Safety is the Focus in New York
May 2008
In Syracuse, New York, Emerald Training group is hosting several workshops designed to maximize workplace safety. Hopefully, they'll also recognize that to really protect the workplace environment, all employers and managers should start with quality, intensive background screening.
The statistics on violence in the workplace are sobering. On average, two murders are committed every day in the workplace. Even more, 5,500 assaults and 140 sexual assaults are reported on a daily basis across the country from places of employment.
Clearly, while workplace safety has improved in recent years, ending violence in the workplace still has a long way to go. One key method is to recognize who is and isn't a threat, but too often employers aren't aware of who that might be until it's too late.
However, anyone can start off the right way with a good background screening program. Keeping dangerous employees off the job in the first place can help boost morale, protect other employees and clients, and minimize employer liability.
Comprehensive background screening will cover multiple bases - a criminal records check will ensure that someone with a dangerous history doesn't accidentally get hired. Employment history can illuminate any past issues with violence or bullying. And, drug testing can pinpoint which potential hires don't belong on the job.
Fostering and maintaining workplace safety is a great way to recoup the estimated 2 billion lost every year due to violence in the workplace. Even better, it can protect the health and well being of the men and women whose hard work are needed to make a good business model happen.
