Richard Kurland 
President and CEO 

Mr. Richard A. Kurland has built his 25+ year career with a deep sense of commitment and an innovative spirit. Employment Background Investigations, Inc. (EBI) was created in 1994 shortly after Mr. Kurland viewed and empathized with a national media story line pertaining to nursing home abuse. Today, EBI is an NAPBS accredited provider of global background screening solutions conducting business in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide with over 5,000 clients.

For seven consecutive years, EBI has been named as a top-provider of employment screening services in Workforce Management’s ‘Hot List’. And in November 2010, EBI was ranked the top background screening provider on HRO Today’s Baker’s Dozen list. Mr. Kurland’s focus on employee empowerment and strategic technology implementation has continued to push the boundaries of industry standards for client service and web-based human resource management tools, and EBI’s excellence in these areas has generated these accolades.

Over the years, Mr. Kurland has continuously infused innovation and energy into the core of EBI’s background screening business solutions. Mr. Kurland’s development of unique suites of Drug Testing and Occupational Healthcare solutions, along with strategic integrations of Applicant Tracking and other HR essential tools, has contributed to fulfilling his vision of a "one stop” shop designed essentially for HR and Risk Mitigation professionals.

Mr. Kurland is a Licensed Private Detective in the State of Maryland and is proud to be a founding member of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS). Community and family are important to Mr. Kurland and in support of community and world outreach, Mr. Kurland established EBI’s "Just One World” philanthropic initiative which supports numerous charitable causes each year. In 2011, Mr. Kurland was selected by Baltimore SmartCEO magazine as a Smart100 CEO. The Smart100 Program recognizes companies and their CEOs who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, strategic vision, and character.

Robert Capwell
Chief Knowledge Officer

Mr. Robert E. Capwell is considered one of the leading experts in the background screening industry with over 22 years of experience in the field. As Chief Knowledge Officer at EBI, Mr. Capwell oversees the implementation of process improvement strategies, conducts corporate education sessions for EBI staff members as well as our clientele, and manages EBI's marketing and communication efforts.

Mr. Capwell is a past Co-Chair of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners’ (NAPBS) Board of Directors and an advocate of the organization as a global spokesperson and industry expert. Robert also leads the industry's efforts to organize a global background screening alliance for NAPBS through a worldwide outreach of screening firms. As Co-Chair of the International Committee of NAPBS, his mission is to create best practices and standards for screening firms around the world and to create a unified Global Alliance Council to support and govern the industry as one global voice. His efforts thus far have united screening firms in Europe, Latin America, South Africa, Canada and the APAC region.

Mr. Capwell was a contributing author of the second edition of the ASIS Pre-employment Background Screening Guidelines and has written several articles and whitepapers for various publications including a periodic column on background screening for The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Online. He has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Human Resource Executive Magazine, Entrepreneur Magazine, and several HR-related publications. Mr. Capwell speaks regularly to industry colleagues and HR Professionals both nationally and internationally. Robert has also made presentations to various government agencies and members of Congress on behalf of the background screening industry, which included The Federal Trade Commission and The Department of Transportation’s Sub-Committee on Aviation. Mr. Capwell has also testified to Pennsylvania Court Administrators and Senate Judiciary Committee staff regarding consumer privacy and data breach legislation. Mr. Capwell was the founder and President of Comprehensive Information Services, Inc. (CIS) a Pittsburgh, PA based employment screening company with over seventeen years of service. EBI acquired CIS in February 2007.

Deborah Klarfeld
Chief Operations and Compliance Officer

Ms. Klarfeld is responsible for developing key company initiatives, building strategic partnerships, streamlining protocols and procedures, advancing product and service offerings, and establishing long-term growth strategies.  In addition, Deborah oversees the Technology and Compliance Departments to ensure proper due diligence, security controls, and compliance measures are being followed throughout the company.

Debbie Klarfeld

Ms. Klarfeld is a proven leader and brings over 19 years of experience in marketing, business, and product development.  Prior to joining EBI in 2009, Deborah held senior level positions in Product Management and Operations for two other screening firms: First Advantage Corporation - American Driving Records Division and US Investigations Services (USIS) - Commercial Services Division. Ms. Klarfeld has also held management and strategic marketing roles in both the publishing and business service industries.  Deborah’s additional work experience includes customer service, software development, and strategic product marketing.


Paul Renda 
Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Paul Renda has over 28 years of Finance, Accounting, Auditing and Management Consulting experience in both Public and Corporate Accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Maryland and New York. He has extensive experience in developing and mentoring Executive and Manager level professionals as well as in the development of corporate controls, policies and procedures.


He has been an Executive and Officer of Employment Background Investigations since 2006 and currently serves as the Corporate Secretary and Treasurer of the company. He is responsible for all Financial, Treasury, Accounting, Tax, Reporting, Human Resource, Insurance and Risk Management functions of the Company.

Prior to joining Employment Background Investigations as Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Renda served as Director of Finance and Accounting for Ann’s House of Nuts, Inc. for five years and was an Accounting and Consulting Manager for American Express Tax and Business Services for six years. Mr. Renda is a Member of the AICPA (American Institute of Public Accountants and MACPA (Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants). 

John Nutile 
Director of Information Technology and Infrastructure

Mr. John Nutile serves as EBI’s Director of Information Technology and Infrastructure. John is responsible for managing the IT Department to ensure secure and seamless management of EBI’s entire technology infrastructure. John’s duties include the development, implementation, and management of EBI’s policies and procedures related to EBI’s Information Security Management System (ISMS) in accordance with EBI’s ISO27001:2005 Certification.

John Nutile

John’s duties also include the collaboration and management of third-party information technology partners, client integration design, and management along with business continuity and disaster recovery strategies. John is an experienced leader with a broad range of skills that include both hardware and software systems design and management.

Previously John was the Senior Manager of Engineering for Ameritrade Holding Corporation where he was responsible for multiple engineering disciplines. His duties included the architecture, engineering, deployment, support, and project management for multiple technologies. He brings experience as a Senior Level Engineer from T-Rowe Price and Technology Principal skills from USF&G Insurance. John has also worked as an independent consultant for startups and existing businesses performing web development, network design, hardware acquisition, implementation, and security management.

Michelle Nichols
Director of Operations

Ms. Michelle Nichols manages all processes regarding background screening and drug testing, including all aspects of EBI’s Customer Service, Public Records, Verifications, Quality Assurance, Processing, and Internal Training Departments. Michelle was promoted to Senior Manager of Background Screening Operations in January 2011, to Director of Background Screening Operations in November 2011 and Director of Operations in March of 2014.


Michelle was previously the Senior Manager of Client Relations where she was responsible for confirming that all client needs were being met in regards to implementation and customer service. Prior to her Senior Manager role, she was the Manager of EBI’s Occupational Healthcare Department. In this position, Michelle managed all departments relating to drug testing and occupational healthcare and was responsible for monitoring all aspects of our clients’ drug testing and occupational healthcare needs.

Prior to being promoted to Manager of the Occupational Healthcare Department in November 2007, Michelle was responsible for new client account setup, including coordinating labs and MRO's, and all aspects of training, including coordinating, monitoring, and conducting trainings. Michelle has vast expertise in project management and implementations of large projects and has over 17 years of customer service experience.
