Substance Dependence and Abuse… The Highs and Lows
In the latest SAMHSA report on Substance Dependence and Abuse, the percentage of persons with a substance use disorder, which may include either drug or alcohol dependence or abuse, ranged from a population high of 12.3 percent in the District of Columbia to a population low of 7.5 percent in New Jersey.
The study also reported that the highest rate of illicit drug dependence or abuse was located within the District of Columbia at 4.3 percent, while the lowest rate was found in the state of Iowa at 2.1 percent.
The lowest rate of alcohol dependence or abuse was found in Kentucky at 6.3 percent while Montana came in with the highest rate at 10.8 percent.
