 One heart wrenching news story about elder abuse led Richard A. Kurland to his calling. The idea that the most vulnerable in our society are often cared for, and taken advantage of, by people with criminal histories, led him to the background screening industry. Employment Background Investigations, Inc. (EBI) opened its doors in 1994. During the last 20 years, Rick Kurland has used his innovative, entrepreneurial spirit to turn EBI into a technological leader in the industry. Today, EBI is an NAPBS accredited provider of global background screening solutions.The company helps more than 5,000 clients create safe and compliant workforces in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

Mr. Kurland continually pushes the boundaries of industry standards. Customer service and leading edge technology are his two main areas of focus. The attention continues to pay off year after year. EBI has been named as a top-provider of employment screening services in Workforce Management’s ‘Hot List’ for seven years running. In November 2010, EBI was ranked the top background screening provider on HRO Today’s Baker’s Dozen list. Mr. Kurland’s focus on employee empowerment and strategic technology implementation are to thank for these accolades. 

Mr. Kurland’s dedication to cutting edge technology has led to the development of the industry’s top drug testing and occupational healthcare solutions, along with strategic integrations of Applicant Tracking and other essential HR tools. His dream of creating a “one-stop shop” design for HR and Risk Mitigation professionals has become a reality, and continues to grow and adapt as the business world changes.

Mr. Kurland is proud to be a founding member of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS). Community and family are important to him as well. EBI’s “Just One World” philanthropic initiative supports numerous causes every year. In 2011, Mr. Kurland was selected by Baltimore SmartCEO magazine as a Smart100 CEO. Robert Capwell

Chief Knowledge Officer

Mr. Robert E. Capwell is considered one of the leading experts in the background screening industry with over 22 years of experience in the field. As Chief Knowledge Officer at EBI, Mr. Capwell oversees the implementation of process improvement strategies, conducts corporate education sessions for EBI staff members as well as our clientele, and manages EBI's marketing and communication efforts.

 Mr. Capwell is a past Co-Chair of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners’ (NAPBS) Board of Directors and an advocate of the organization as a global spokesperson and industry expert. Robert also leads the industry's efforts to organize a global background screening alliance for NAPBS through a worldwide outreach of screening firms. As Co-Chair of the International Committee of NAPBS, his mission is to create best practices and standards for screening firms around the world and to create a unified Global Alliance Council to support and govern the industry as one global voice. His efforts thus far have united screening firms in Europe, Latin America, South Africa, Canada and the APAC region.

Mr. Capwell was a contributing author of the second edition of the ASIS Pre-employment Background Screening Guidelines and has written several articles and whitepapers for various publications including a periodic column on background screening for The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Online. He has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Human Resource Executive Magazine, Entrepreneur Magazine, and several HR-related publications. Mr. Capwell speaks regularly to industry colleagues and HR Professionals both nationally and internationally. Robert has also made presentations to various government agencies and members of Congress on behalf of the background screening industry, which included The Federal Trade Commission and The Department of Transportation’s Sub-Committee on Aviation. Mr. Capwell has also testified to Pennsylvania Court Administrators and Senate Judiciary Committee staff regarding consumer privacy and data breach legislation. Mr. Capwell was the founder and President of Comprehensive Information Services, Inc. (CIS) a Pittsburgh, PA based employment screening company with over seventeen years of service. EBI acquired CIS in February 2007.

Larry White

Chief Operations and Compliance Officer

With over 15 years experience in the background screening industry, Larry’s organizations have been responsible for over 35,000,000 background investigations and assimilated 10 industry acquisitions.  Larry’s responsibilities include operational and service leadership, new products/client solutions, compliance and supporting technology and business development.

Prior to joining EBI as COO, Larry held executive positions with Dun & Bradstreet, ChoicePoint, Pinkerton Services Group, Yale Associates and most recently eVerifile.  Larry received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he was recognized with the Wall Street Journal Award of Excellence for Economics Study.

Michelle Nichols

Director of Operations

Ms. Michelle Nichols has more than 17 years of customer service and operational experience.  She is responsible for both Background Screening, Drug Testing and Occupational Health operational units.  

Ms. Nichols is dedicated to constant improvement, and uses her vast expertise in project management to implement EBI’s industry leading screening platform, J-One.
